Coronavirus may affect Ukraine's supply of crop protection products

Due to the spread of the coronavirus in the world, including in Ukraine, problems with the supply of crop protection products may arise in the 2020 season. Serhii Borysov, head of the chemical division and the DEFENDA brand at «LNZ Group», told SuperAgronom.com about this.

Why are there problems with supplies from China? First of all, because our New Year does not coincide with theirs. The large number of days off makes work difficult. This year, an additional problem was the spread of the coronavirus, due to which a quarantine has been imposed in China.

As a result, the ships that were supposed to deliver the goods were cancelled, or their departure was postponed until the quarantine is lifted next Monday. Some were supposed to leave the country even before the holidays there began. The situation is that the quarantine may not end so soon, so there will be quite a few problems with crop protection products, since production has already shifted by more than three weeks.

The issue is not only logistics, but also production itself, because plants and factories are not working either: active ingredients and products are not being manufactured, or only in certain very limited volumes.

«We are agricultural producers and dealers, so we always have a strategic stock of crop protection products. As of today, we see no shortage in production or for clients. We make early purchases, so 70% of the goods are in warehouses. The other 30% are on their way to Ukraine,» noted Serhii Borysov.

In addition to the above difficulties related to China, our country also faces a number of challenges that may hinder an effective season. These include an unusual winter, uncertainty about the start of sowing, and weak winter crops. Fungicides will be in high demand, they will be actively purchased for winter crops, so a shortage may arise.

«This year, when communicating with sellers of crop protection products, farmers should make sure that the products are already in warehouses, as there may be problems with timely delivery,» advised Serhii Borysov.
