Weather with sharp temperature fluctuations creates favourable conditions for the development of fungal diseases in orchards. One of the main threats to apple plantations remains scab, the fight against which should begin even before the first symptoms appear.
This is reported by Zemliak.com with reference to the words of Serhii Korniushenko, Agri-technology Development Manager for the Southern region of LNZ Group.
According to the expert, it is critically important to prevent the disease from spreading in the early stages of vegetation, since treating an already infected tree is a much more complex and expensive process.
"I would recommend definitely carrying out apple tree treatments so as not to let scab take hold. The best strategy is prevention. It is always better to act ahead of the curve than to then try to cure an already developed disease," Serhii Korniushenko emphasises.
Apple scab develops intensively under conditions of high humidity and moderate temperatures. If the first fungicide treatments are missed, the fungus affects the leaves and young ovaries, which leads to a loss of the fruit's marketable appearance and a decrease in the orchard's overall yield.
For effective protection, specialists recommend using systemic and contact fungicides, which provide a reliable screen against the disease pathogen during the critical period of flowering and fruit formation.
