In the Ternopil region, favourable conditions developed for the development and spread of sunflower septoria

This year in the Ternopil region, favourable conditions developed for the development of septoria on sunflower. The development of septoria is favoured by moist and warm weather. This was reported in a comment for SuperAgronom.com by the specialists of the Agro Department of LNZ Group.

The disease pathogen is the imperfect fungus Septoria helianthi Ell. et Kell. If early infection occurred, then brownish spots appear on the cotyledons, slightly pressed into the tissue. Later, yellow spots 0.8-1 cm in diameter with a light border form on the true leaves, which subsequently acquire a dark-brown colour.

Among the possible consequences of sunflower septoria infection:

  • a significant reduction of the plants' assimilation surface,
  • premature dying-off of the affected parts of the plant,
  • a reduction in productivity,
  • deterioration of yield,
  • a reduction in oil content.

To protect sunflower crops from septoria, specialists recommend applying Dot (cyproconazole, 80 g/l + propiconazole, 250 g/l) 0.5-0.6 l/ha for the first application at the 4-6 true leaf phase.

For the second application before the start of flowering — Split (difenoconazole, 250 g/l) 0.2 l/ha + Stark (azoxystrobin, 250 g/l) 0.8 l/ha in a tank mix.
