Phosphorus at the start of maize development: how to effectively meet the plants' need, the specialist related

Phosphorus plays a key role in ensuring the full-fledged growth and development of maize. This element is of particular importance at the initial stages, when a powerful root system is laid down and the generative organs form. Already by the tasselling phase the crop assimilates over 60% of its phosphorus need.

At the early phases of the growing season, a deficiency of this element manifests itself fairly quickly. A characteristic symptom is the purple-red colouring of the leaves, which usually begins from the edges and gradually covers the entire leaf blade. Most often such signs can be seen in the 4–5 leaves phase.

"For the quick elimination of a deficiency of macroelements (phosphorus and potassium) we recommend the application of the micro-fertiliser DEFENDA Macro. The microelements that are also part of the product increase the plants' resistance to stress, improve photosynthetic activity," noted Serhii Korniushenko.

And since phosphorus practically does not move in the soil, while the need for it arises from the very first days after emergence, one of the most effective solutions is the application of starter fertilisers that contain this element. It is exactly this approach that makes it possible to prevent the development of a deficiency even before visual symptoms appear.

"It is worth remembering: phosphorus nutrition that was not applied in time is practically impossible to compensate for later. Therefore it is important to provide the maize with this element already at the start of growth — this will lay the foundation for the further development of the crop and the future harvest," summed up the specialist.
