Autumn growth regulation of winter rapeseed: how to avoid overgrowth and increase winter hardiness

Growth regulation of winter rapeseed helps to avoid stretching of the plants, improves their resistance to frost, strengthens the root system and ensures uniform development. This was reported in a comment for Kurkul.com by Serhii Uvarov, agri-technology development manager for the north-eastern and western region of LNZ Group.

Autumn growth regulation of winter rapeseed: how to avoid overgrowth and increase winter hardiness фото 1 LNZ GroupAccording to the specialist, it is optimal to combine growth regulation, nutrition, fungicide and insecticide protection into one operation, since the number of such measures in autumn varies depending on the sowing dates from 1 to 4. For example, at optimal and late sowing dates — from one to two, at early ones — no fewer than three.

The first measure, starting from the 4-5 leaf phase, aimed at protection against alternaria, phoma and powdery mildew, LNZ Group recommends carrying out using in a tank mix:

  • the fungicides Taler (tebuconazole, 250 g/l) at a rate of 0.5-1.0 l/ha;
  • Kamzol (metconazole, 60 g/l) 0.75-1.25 l/ha or Kamzol Turbo (cyproconazole, 80 g/l + metconazole, 60 g/l) at a rate of 0.5-0.7 l/ha
"These fungicides have a retardant effect: they slow the growth of winter rapeseed, which helps the plants enter winter in the optimal development phase, without overgrowth," noted Serhii Uvarov

. The second application at the 8-9 leaf phase of rapeseed he recommends carrying out using in a tank mix the fungicide tebuconazole, 250 g/l at a rate of 1.0-1.2 l/ha. "If during the second treatment warm weather is observed, there are sufficient moisture reserves in the soil and rapeseed vegetation will continue, then chlormequat chloride, 700 g/l at a rate of 0.5-1.0 l/ha, must be added to the tebuconazole. Insecticide protection, as in the previous case, with the products Bombardier Duo at a rate of 0.15-0.25 l/ha or Presto at a rate of 0.3-0.4 l/ha against sawflies, flea beetles, weevils and other pests," the specialist specified.

In addition, the micro-fertilisers DEFENDA Bor at a rate of 1 l/ha and DEFENDA 13-40-13 + ME at a rate of 2-3 kg/ha) or DEFENDA 19-19-19 + ME at a rate of 2-3 kg/ha should be added for the development of side shoots and improvement of plant overwintering.
