Are fungicides needed on winter crops in autumn

The experience of recent years has shown that the key element of fungicide protection of winter crops in autumn remains a correctly selected seed treatment. This was reported in a comment for Kurkul.com by Serhii Uvarov, agri-technology development manager for the north-eastern and western region of LNZ Group.

The specialist explained that the development and vegetation of winter crops depends primarily on a well-selected fungicide seed treatment. Since it controls the development of fungal diseases and protects the crops in the initial growth stages.

The DEFENDA portfolio has 4 fungicide seed treatments for the primary protection of crops: Fuksia, Absolut, Bastion and Khloris. As well as insecticide solutions — Latina and Metaksa. As the specialist emphasised, the seed treatment should be selected based on a laboratory analysis of the seed material and the field's disease history. He also noted that the higher the rate of seed treatment, the greater the protective effect and the longer the protection will be afterwards.

"Seed treatments make it possible to protect crops from disease infection up to the third leaf. From the fourth leaf, tillering already begins in cereals. That is, a well-selected seed treatment, depending on the fungal infection on the seed, provides effective fungicide protection in autumn," Serhii Uvarov explained.
