For the 2020/21 harvest, Agrofirma «Viktoriia» (LNZ Group) increased its winter wheat area by 1 thousand ha. The total area under this crop is 6.2 thousand ha.
This was reported to AgroPortal.ua by Mykola Balym, Deputy Director for Production at AF «Viktoriia».
«This year we also plan to reduce the sunflower area by 1 thousand ha and expand the area under corn and soybeans», — notes Mykola Balym.
According to him, in 2020 the farm achieved yields within plan for all main crops, but the crops' potential was much higher, and drought prevented it from being realized.
«The yield of winter wheat was 50 c/ha, sunflower — 32 c/ha, grain corn — 91 c/ha, soybeans — 20 c/ha. If not for the drought, for corn, for example, we could have obtained a 15% higher yield. The critical lack of moisture coincided with the ear filling period, so, of course, some hybrids, especially late-maturing ones, did not fully realize their potential», — explains Mykola Balym.
He added that an analysis of the 2020 weather conditions and their impact on crop yields was carried out, and certain conclusions were drawn.
«Personally, I am a supporter of early sowing: as soon as the soil and temperature allow you to go into the field, you need to sow. With early sowing, the plant still manages to grow normally and to set the yield before the hot days of July», — says Mykola Balym.
According to him, while corn used to be sown in the third ten-day period of April, in 2020 the company started sowing this crop on April 8. Given climate change, AF «Viktoriia» plans to continue following early sowing technology.
